Case study: moving a manufacturing group from SAP to Tally Prime

A migration is judged on one thing: whether the finance team trusts the numbers in the new system on the first working day. Here is how that was achieved on a live SAP-to-Tally project.

Quick answerAn Indian manufacturing group moved its financial accounting off SAP and onto Tally Prime with TACHY. The work covered chart-of-accounts remapping from SAP GL accounts and cost centres to Tally groups and ledgers, master data, opening balances with bill-wise detail preserved, statutory history, and a full trial-balance reconciliation signed off by the finance team before cutover. The client is not named here at their preference; the method below is the one we apply to every engagement.
A note on this case study. The client is described here without their name, at their preference. Nothing on this page is an estimate or an illustration — it describes work that was delivered. Where we do not quote a figure, it is because we will not publish a client's financial detail, not because there was no result. We can discuss specifics under NDA on a scoping call.

The situation

A manufacturing group running SAP for its financial accounting concluded that the system had outgrown its usefulness to them rather than the other way round. The pattern was a familiar one:

The requirement

The brief was not "export the data". It was that the books had to remain auditable across the boundary. Specifically:

How the project ran

PhaseWhat was done
DiscoveryEstablished what was actually in use in SAP as opposed to configured, agreed the scope of history to carry, and fixed the cutover date against a clean accounting boundary.
Chart-of-accounts mappingSAP GL accounts, cost centres and profit centres mapped onto Tally groups and ledgers. This was the phase that took the most discussion, because the decisions here determine whether management reporting still works afterwards — collapsing too much detail is the common and irreversible mistake.
Extraction & transformationMaster data, balances and in-scope transaction history extracted from SAP and transformed into Tally's import format, with tax codes resolved by rule where no clean one-to-one equivalent existed.
Trial load & reconciliationData loaded into a working Tally company and reconciled: trial balance against SAP, party-wise receivables and payables, tax records against filed returns, stock quantity and value. Every difference was investigated to a cause and listed — none were written to suspense to make a report look clean.
Parallel runBoth systems ran against the same transactions for an agreed period so the finance team could compare reports out of each and satisfy themselves before committing.
Cutover & sign-offFinal differential load, SAP frozen for posting, and the reconciliation pack signed off by the finance team as the audit record of the transition.

What was difficult

The parts of this project that consumed effort were not the parts a tool demo covers:

The outcome

The group's financial accounting now runs in Tally Prime. The trial balance was reconciled and signed off before cutover, open items carried their bill-wise detail into the new system, and statutory history was preserved. The finance team works in a system they already knew, and the group is no longer carrying an SAP estate sized for a footprint it had stopped using.

If this resembles your situation

The profile this applies to is a mid-sized Indian group whose live SAP use is substantially financial accounting, statutory reporting and inventory — particularly one weighing what to do before SAP ECC mainstream maintenance ends in December 2027. If production planning, quality management or complex costing are genuinely load-bearing in your SAP system, this is the wrong move and we will say so on the first call.

The method, scope and pricing model are set out on our SAP to Tally migration page.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the client not named on this page?

At their preference. We do not publish a client's name or financial detail without explicit written permission, and we would extend the same discretion to your organisation. Specifics can be discussed under NDA on a scoping call, and we can arrange a reference conversation where the client agrees to one.

Is this the typical scope for a SAP to Tally migration?

It is representative of a single-entity migration where financial accounting, statutory history and inventory move and the wider SAP footprint is retired. Scope grows with additional legal entities, more years of transaction history, and inventory complexity such as batches, multiple godowns or a change in valuation method.

What made the project succeed?

Two things above all. First, the chart-of-accounts mapping was treated as a finance decision requiring sign-off rather than a technical translation step. Second, reconciliation was a deliverable with an audit-ready pack behind it, so the cutover decision rested on evidence the finance team had checked themselves rather than on assurance from a vendor.
